How to Prepare Your Roof for Winter

Wintertime can mean a lot of enjoyable holidays, but it also means the snow, ice, and cold. In Minnesota, winter isn’t always so relaxed, and the weather is a significant concern. So, now is an ideal time to take stock of your roof and ensure it’s in good condition.

You can take a few steps to protect your roof for winter, so you don’t wind up with major structural problems that are expensive and potentially dangerous.

Step 1: Check The Roofline

First, you can start with a visual inspection of your roofline to check for signs of damage. If you see any sags or dips, it’s best to contact a roofing contractor for repairs. Even if the sagging or dipping is minimal, snow can quickly accumulate in the winter and increase the risk of a cave-in if the roof isn’t sound. Also, look for signs of previous storm damage, such as damaged or missing shingles.

Step 2: Remove Any Debris

If you have a flat roof or if your roof has some debris from the fall, now is the time to clear it off. Be sure to use caution if you're getting up on the roof yourself. And, if you aren’t comfortable with the process, let the roofing maintenance team at Platinum Restoration handle this for you.

Step 3: Clear Out Your Gutters

You want your gutters to be in great shape for the winter. Otherwise, water and snow can get stuck and lead to problems like water damage and improper drainage. So, make sure to clear out excess debris and consider installing a gutter guard.

Step 4: Check Your Attic

If you already have water damage in your attic or on your ceiling, now is the time to act. So, make sure you examine for signs of water leaks or mold. You’ll want to have these issues fixed immediately, especially before winter storms start rolling in.

Step 5: Contact Minnesota Roofing Experts

If you notice any potential issues on your roof, it’s easiest and safest to reach out to the roofing contractors at Platinum Restoration. We have extensive experience in storm damage repair, and we understand the winter weather risk. Call us today at 763-244-1474 to request a free quote.
